Breast implants:

Implants are important in breast augmentation surgery. Your surgeon will guide you about the types of implants available and the right one for you to choose. You should consider the quality of implants while deciding on this surgery. Following are the types of implants normally used:

Silicone implants: Implants filled with silicone gel. These are soft and feel like natural breasts.
Liquid implants: These are filled with sterile saline water. These are little firmer and feel slightly less than the normal breasts.
Polyurethane implants: These are polyurethane foam covered silicone implants giving a furry feel. They remain positioned in the breast more securely and are less likely to get displaced or rotated.

Before surgery, the surgeon would have your full psychological and physical evaluation done. You are expected to have a satisfying motivation behind it. Your surgeon will have your full medical history. He will detail you about the risks and possible concerns related to the surgery and implants. If you are above 40, you may be advised to go for a mammogram.

Procedure:

The surgery is done using general anesthesia and the procedure may last for 1-2 hours. Normally, a small incision is done along the breast crease to form a pocket. The implant will be placed through it and the incision will be stitched. Women not having enough breast skin and tissue to cover the implant may have it implanted behind the pectoral muscle. Four different types of procedures are followed and it is solely the surgeon’s discretion in choosing the procedure.

Recovery

Breast augmentation surgery is a day care procedure and you may go home the same day. You will have to wear a post-surgical bra 24 hours a day for several weeks after surgery. This is to ensure proper support and protection to your breasts. Follow up clinic visits are required to assess the progress of your post-operative recovery. You can resume work after one week. That will again depend on the nature of your job. It takes approximately about 4-6 weeks to get back to your full-scale activities.
