Lumbar Laminectomy is a surgical procedure of the removal of the lamina or bony arch. This surgery is recommended to treat chronic pain or when other treatment options have failed. In this surgery, the surgeon removes the ligaments and bone spurs that are pressing on the nerve roots or spinal cord.
Some of the various reasons why a person may have to undergo this surgical procedure include
- Shrinking of spinal disc or swelling of the ligaments and bones due to aging
- Spinal arthritis
- Abnormal or congenital defect of the spine at birth
- Improper growth of the bones AKA Paget disease
- To treat dwarfism conditions like achondroplasia
